Which Renovation Project Would You Prioritise?

Making changes to your home can seem daunting, but the results of a job well done will always outweigh any initial concerns. Whether its large changes, such as a complete renovation or extension, or small changes such as a lick of paint, the difference is often incredible.

In our latest post, we take a look at what aspect of their house UK homeowners said they would like to renovate.

The survey, which was carried out by Money Supermarket, found that the most popular room UK homeowners would like to renovate was the kitchen. Interestingly, the research also stated that a kitchen renovation could add around 5.5% to the value of a home.

Aside from the kitchen, lets a take a look at what other rooms came out on top.

Garden Makeover

The second most popular section of the home to improve was the garden, with 20% of respondents saying they would renovate this area given the chance.

Figures suggest that the average cost of a garden makeover is around £9,000, though this cost will, of course, depend on the changes you would like to make. Interestingly, a garden renovation will add the least amount of value to a home in comparison with other areas – coming in at around 1.4%.

Bathroom

16% of those surveyed said that a new bathroom would be at the top of their priority list to renovate. A new bathroom can add an average of 2.6% to the value of a home and costs around £4,500.

Extension

An extension is one of the more costly renovation projects to carry out and can cost in the region of £22,500. This high price is counteracted with an average of 8.8% rise in property value.

Loft Conversion

Loft conversions come in as the 5th most popular renovation wanted by UK homeowners, but this project also comes in at the highest average cost. For a complete loft conversion, homeowners can expect to pay around £37,500.

Impressively, a loft conversion can add, on average, 10.8% to the value of a property.

New home office

Interestingly, a new home office is the least popular renovation wanted by UK homeowners, but also carries an average 10.8% increase to the value of a property. A new home office is the cheapest renovation on this list to carry out, costing in the region of £1,715.

Conservatory

5% of survey respondents said they would like to add a conservatory to their home, coming with an increase in property value of around 6%. The cost of a conservatory is around £9,500.
